Scope and limitations

These tools help organize ingredient/source evidence, calculate provisional nutrition and prepare a Canadian food-label review. They do not provide CFIA or Health Canada certification, approval or endorsement, or guarantee that a food or printed label complies with law.

The supported core review concerns food as sold for the general population under the tool's restrictions. Special populations, added nutrients, fortification, nutrition/health claims, unsupported formats and exemptions can need additional qualified review. A selectable calculation audience does not establish support for that audience's retail labelling rules.

Check the source and finished product

Results depend on entered information, the selected sources, processing and the actual finished product. Canadian Nutrient File values, Open Food Facts package information or manual entries can be incomplete or unsuitable. Check units, serving basis, source identity and missing values. An unknown value is not zero. Importing a barcode does not verify package information or an allergen claim.

Before using a label on food for sale

You or a qualified reviewer must check the actual finished product and final physical artwork. Keep the evidence and review changes to recipe, supplier, process or packaging. The following checklist assists review; it is not a compliance determination.

  • Ingredient/component names and order; priority allergens, gluten and sulphites.
  • Common name, net quantity, responsible-party information and applicable date/storage instructions.
  • Required English and French information and commodity-specific requirements.
  • Serving/reference amount, representative nutrition values, rounding, Daily Values and required Nutrition Facts format/legibility.
  • Package size/type, front-of-package symbol thresholds, exemptions, artwork and placement.
  • Claims, fortification, additional nutrients and any other product-specific rules.

Samples and completed checks

SAMPLE — NOT FOR RETAIL USE means the required review is incomplete. An experimental preview is not official approval. Complete the required evidence and review before using any output as retail artwork.

A completed status records the tool's supported checks, saved rule/source versions and your evidence. It is not proof that the physical food, package or printing complies. Final producer/reviewer responsibility remains, and unsupported requirements still need qualified review.
